Excellence in Placemaking
MyPLACE AWARDS recognises excellence in placemaking efforts by organisations and communities to improve public spaces, which bring positive impacts and benefits to their local communities.
The nomination emphasis on initiatives for the improvement of public spaces and placemaking that demonstrate positive considerations and impacts on the physical and social integration within and between the public spaces and its surrounding urban setting. This include consideration on the quality of its public realm, urban design, landscape and streetscape functions, and integration of the project with the surrounding environment which ultimately creates a sense of place to the public.
The shortlisted projects need to be nominated by general public, representatives of local and business communities, non-governmental (NGO) groups, community-based organization (CBO) and private or public organisations.
Eligibility Criteria
(01) Project Location
The project must be located in Malaysia.
(02) Project Status
The project must be completed although doesn’t necessarily need to be newly constructed or initiated.
(03) Project Accessibility
The project must be publicly accessible and provide benefits for the community in which it is located.
(04) Project Values
The project must provide lessons, strategies, and techniques that could be replicated or adopted in other communities
Awards Categories
Category 1
City & Town Park
- Recognizing efforts by the local authorities in creating, improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating and maintaining the parks within their cities.
- The parks are identified as City /Town Park under respective local plan.
- Nomination are open to federal, state, and local governments. Communities can nominate too.
- Sub Category 1 : 50 Hectares & above
- Sub Category 2 : Below 50 Hectares.
- Fee : RM 300.00
Category 2
Community & Neighbourhood Park
- Recognizing efforts in creating, developing, improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating and maintaining community parks within neighbourhood areas.
- Nominations are open to general public, local communities, representatives of local community and NGOs, local authorities and federal and state government agencies.
- Fee : RM 150.00
Category 3
Outdoor Public Space
- Recognizing efforts in creating, developing, improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating and maintaining outdoor public spaces such as outdoor plaza, squares and pocket parks that bring positive impacts to its surrounding areas and the communities.
- Nominations are open to all, including general public, local communities, business communities, NGOs, developers, private sectors and local authorities.
- Sub Category 1 (Recreational) : Public spaces that can be used for purposes of personal, group and community social recreation, sport and physical activity.
- Sub Category 2 (Cultural Heritage) : Public spaces that have significant roles within the community and integrate tangible and intangible cultural heritage resources within the space, and the public spaces are strongly connected to cultural activities within their areas and communities.
- Fee : RM 150.00
Category 4
Indoor Public Space
- Recognizing efforts in creating, developing, improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating and maintaining indoor public spaces such as surau, food court, community centers, and other facilities within buildings that such efforts provide greater convenient, togetherness and comfort to local communities and visitors.
- Nominations are open to all, including general public, building owners/administrators.
- Fee : RM 150.00
Category 5
Street
- Recognizing efforts and projects in reclaiming, improving, and transforming streets into creative public spaces, giving priority to pedestrian and non-motorized users.
- Nominations are open to all, including general public, adjacent users, business communities, local residents, NGOs, local authorities, developers, building owners/administrators.
- Fee : RM 150.00
Category 6
Back Lane & Side Lane
- Recognizing efforts and projects in improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating and maintaining back lane or side lane into creative public spaces, giving priority to pedestrian and non-motorized users.
- Nominations are open to all, including general public, adjacent users, business communities, local residents, NGOs, local authorities, developers, building owners/administrators.
- Fee : RM 150.00
Category 7
Urban Farming
- Recognizing efforts in creating and initiating urban farming activities that give impacts to the social, economic and communal of the area.
- Nominations are open to all, including general public, adjacent users, business communities, local residents, NGOs, local authorities, and developers.

Category 8
Private Sector Place-making
- Recognizing efforts by developers in creating, developing, improving, redeveloping, rejuvenating, transforming and maintaining outdoor public spaces within their own development scheme.
- Nominations are open to developers, local authorities and general public.
- Fee : RM 300.00
Category 9
Local Place-making Warrior
- Recognizing individuals who drive place-making or community place-making initiatives.
- Nominations are open to individuals, NGOs, local authorities and other government agencies.
- Fee : Free
Category 10
Place-making Article in Print & Digital Media
- Recognizing articles in print and digital media which continuously provide awareness to communities on the importance of creating, maintaining and protecting public spaces.
- Nominations are open to media, reporters, writers and general public.
- Fee : Free
